The blooming of these flowers served as a reminder to people across Laos of the approaching New Year.Mina, a 31-year-old resident of the capital Vientiane, told Xinhua that the blooming of the Dok Khoun flowers is like a signal that the Lao New Year is approaching. The bright yellow flowers fill the streets and the air with joy."To celebrate the Lao New Year, my family and I fill small bowls with clean water, adding petals and perfume to bless our home, Buddha images, and elders. Additionally, we use the flowers to decorate our house and car, symbolizing happiness and good fortune," said Mina.The Lao government has issued guidelines for the 2025 Lao New Year celebrations, highlighting the importance of cultural preservation and safety throughout the festivities. The government encouraged all celebrations in the country to follow traditional practices.Souphavanh, an office worker, said, "While the festivities are fun and lively, safety and moderation are key. I want to encourage the younger generation to celebrate the festival respectfully, focusing on respect, gratitude, and cultural preservation."Lao authorities were preparing to celebrate the festival and welcomed the vibrant influx of tourists during the Lao New Year celebration. Meanwhile, northern Laos' Luang Prabang province was gearing up for the New Year festival, with an exciting lineup of events scheduled from April 11 to 20, attracting both local and international visitors.Aksone, an office worker from Khammuan province, believed that Luang Prabang will be a top destination for those wanting to experience the rich culture of Lao New Year, thanks to its cultural activities and peaceful atmosphere, making it a favorite among both locals and tourists."In terms of beliefs, to remove bad luck and welcome good fortune, we clean our home and buy new clothes for a fresh start. This year, my family and friends will gather for a hearty meal. We will also visit temples and participate in the water splashing tradition," he said.Chai, a market vendor, said that the Lao New Year festival helps boost the local economy. During the festival, demand for goods like clothes, food, and decorations rises, leading to higher sales.She said that people tend to spend more during the festival, and many customers come to the market looking for specific items for the celebrations. The festive atmosphere also encourages more people to spend.To ensure safety, Laos' Ministry of Public Security will strengthen measures to ensure road safety and a peaceful, joyful celebration during the Lao New Year 2025.The Lao New Year is the most important festival in the Lao calendar. This year's holiday will be observed from April 14 to April 16.
