Incorporating Burma Sun, named after The Sun 1911-1954
Myanmar Sun services the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, a sovereign country in Southeast Asia.
Myanmar, also known as Burma, is surrounded by Laos and Thailand to its east, Bangladesh and India to its west, while China is positioned to its north and northeast. To its south lies the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.
Myanmar Sun incorporates Burma Sun which was named after The Sun, a conventional newspaper that circulated in the country, then known as Burma from 1910 to 1954.
This latest, digital, edition of Burma Sun now coming under the Myanmar Sun banner has a far different landscape to that of its predecessor which had to deal with decades of ethnic strife and a long-running civil war. In more recent years the country has become much more settled, following the handover of government in 2011 by the military junta to a democratic government elected in 2010, which co-incided with the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and a large number of other political prisoners from detention.
Aung San's government went on to victory in the 2015 election, winning both houses of parliament.
The changes have helped bring Myanmar back in from the cold, with the international community welcoming the changes, and easing economic sanctions and boosting trade relations.
Myanmar Sun's coverage extends to the whole of the country, while many articles focus on the national perspective, news of the major cities including Naypyidaw, Mandalay, Hpa-An, Bago, Monywa, Taunggyi, and the capital Yangong which houses 10 percent of the country's more than 51 million population, also feature.
National Myanmar news is supplemented by world headlines and business reports. There is also a section on Southeast Asia news.
Myanmar Sun provides hotel reviews, and movie reviews by James Kendrick.
