MEMPHIS, Tennessee: Tennessee authorities are slowly releasing information about a weekend car crash on a freeway that killed six young people, including a 1-year-old baby, as well as injured two adults, one critically.
In a news release, Brent Dyer, chief of the county's emergency management services office, said that when officers responded at about 2 a.m. on March 26 to the crash site in Robertson County, emergency crews found a car upside down with extensive damage.
He added that first responders found six females, aged from 1 to 18, had been thrown from the car and could not be resuscitated.
Also, a man suffered minor injuries, while a woman was hospitalized in critical condition after apparently being ejected from the car, officials added.
A second vehicle, whose driver was not hurt, was found near the damaged car, officials added.
After the crash, a section of the highway was closed for hours, before later reopening.
The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and the county emergency management office is working with professional mental health and counseling services to offer help to crews that responded to the crash.
"Our office recognizes the incredible difficulty of this scene," Dyer said.
