KATHMANDU, Nepal - This year, disaster-related incidents have claimed the lives of 73 people. Lightning is the cause of the most deaths.
Twenty-seven people were killed when a thunderbolt struck them. Similarly, 15 people have died in fires, ten by wildlife attacks, eight by landslides, eight by gusty winds, and three by snakebite, while floods claimed two lives.
The number of people injured from various disaster incidents across the country from April 14, 2021, to June 19, 2022, is also high, while exact data on physical property losses are not yet available.
This information was shared during a meeting with journalists organized by the Disaster Preparedness Network- Nepal (DPNet-Nepal) on the 'Role of Communication in Early Warning System.
Prof Dr. Jeevraj Pokharel, the former vice-chancellor of the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), emphasized the importance of adopting indigenous technology for disaster risk reduction, as natural disaster incidents have been increasing in recent years.
According to him, it will be challenging to reduce disaster risk until adequate disaster knowledge is disseminated to people, effective monitoring and communication systems are put in place, and community capacity is built.
